Domenico Vacca

Il Perfezionista

Domenico Vacca is the founder and creative director of the luxury brand Domenico Vacca. In 1996, Domenico Vacca decided to return to his family roots by reviving the fashion atelier founded in Puglia in 1920 by his maternal grandmother, Savina Orciulo, and investing in a Neapolitan clothing company. After six years of developing men’s and women’s collections and expanding the business in the American market, he launched his own brand, Domenico Vacca, which today is a leader in the luxury menswear and womenswear industry. In 2002, he opened the first Domenico Vacca store on the prestigious Fifth Avenue in New York, alongside the giants of international fashion, bringing to the American metropolis the true Made in Italy—authentic in style, quality, and fit. That same year, the Italian newspaper La Repubblica published an article on the brand’s exceptional success in the U.S., calling Domenico Vacca “the Ferrari of clothing.” Success followed swiftly, with the opening of two more stores in New York on Madison Avenue and one on West Broadway in SoHo. More locations quickly followed in Beverly Hills, Miami and Palm Beach in Florida, Doha in Qatar, London, Mexico, and Moscow. In 2015, the designer opened The Domenico Vacca, a ten-story building on 55th Street, at the corner of Fifth Avenue, which became the American headquarters of his fashion house and the first building in New York to bear the name of an Italian. In 2021, a Domenico Vacca boutique opened in Rome on Via della Croce, at the corner of Piazza di Spagna. In 2024, another boutique opened in Bari on Via Calefati, at the corner of Via Sparano, and in July 2024, an atelier will open in Milan, in Piazza San Babila, within a showroom that also supports international distribution. Since 2003, Domenico Vacca has been one of Hollywood’s most beloved designers, creating wardrobes for lead actors in over fifty films and TV series, including Denzel Washington in American Gangster, Al Pacino in The Son of No One, Dustin Hoffman in Stranger Than Fiction, Harrison Ford in Morning Glory, Glenn Close in Damages, Forest Whitaker in Street Kings and The Godfather of Harlem, Jeremy Piven in Entourage, Terrence Howard in Empire, and many more. Domenico Vacca has dressed the most prestigious Hollywood stars on the red carpets of major international film awards, including the Golden Globes and the Oscars. Daniel Day-Lewis, Mickey Rourke, Forest Whitaker, Alan Arkin, Steve Carell, Will Ferrell, Jack Black, Seth Rogen, and Jonah Hill are just some of the celebrities who have worn his creations. In 2022, at the Cannes Film Festival, Forest Whitaker received the Palme d’Or for lifetime achievement wearing Domenico Vacca, with many other actors and directors following his lead.  Domenico Vacca’s loyal customers include music’s biggest stars such as Kanye West, Usher, 50 Cent, L.A. Reid, Sean P. Diddy Combs, and Yoko Ono; A-list actors, Ashton Kutcher, Denzel Washington, Christopher Plummer, Dustin Hoffman, Jodie Foster, John Malkovich, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Keri Russell, Melanie Griffith, Nicolette Sheridan, Queen Latifah, Renée Zellweger, Alan Alda, Vincent Gallo, Jack Black, Michael Imperioli, Glenn Close, Jeremy Piven, Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, Antonio Banderas and Scarlett Johansson; athletes Lebron James, Scottie Pippen and Steve Smith; New York City’s Fortune 500 and VIPs Ronald Perelman, Ronald Lauder, Gustavo Cisneros, Edgar Bronfman Jr, Pepe Fanjul, Giuseppe Cipriani, Ivana Trump and Anne Bass along with designers Valentino and Tommy Hilfiger.

What do you do in your life (work and fun)?

I work and travel a lot for business, building a brand takes a lot of work but I am very passionate about it and therefore most of the times I do not feel I am… working. For the last two years my free time has been dedicate to my newborn son, my first. I spend every single time I am not working with him, he is the love of my life and to be with him it is a true joy.

What made you leave Italy and choose New York.

I wanted to be in a city where every thing starts or arrives. Every trend, every cultural event. It is the only city where I feel I am not missing anything.

Please share your best memory in the City.

I have many great memories in New York, the launch of my first collection, the opening of my first flagship store, right on Fifth Avenue across from the Plaza Hotel, Valentino coming to the store to shop, Daniel Day Lewis coming to try his tuxedo for the Oscars, but I think the best memory is my first fashion show during New York Fashion Week, see my creations shown in front of 1.000 people from the fashion industry and celebrities and walk the runway at the end of the show are definitely my best memory in New York.

What made you choose this specific location and outfit for the photoshoot?

I love Beverly Hills, I had a store on Rodeo Drive for 10 years and I used to spend three months a year in Los Angeles. Love the light, the palms… the luxury contemporary feel of Rodeo Drive…and also some of my favorite movies were filmed here (American Gigolo’, Pretty Woman…)

Your thought about this project, Italiany.us

Great project! There are many Italians in the US and their stories must be told. We left everything to find our path in a competitive world far away from home and from our friends and family and many are thinking of doing the same. I hope our stories can help them to make the right decision for them.

How would you describe being an ambassador of the Italian style/culture abroad?

It means promoting constantly Italian style and culture, in any moment, in any occasion. When Americans meet an Italian they have very high expectations, I need to be sure they are not disappointed.

Tell us a bit about your love for motorcycles.

I love motorcycles. When I was really young I could not wait to be of age to drive one and of course my first one was a… Vespa! Then I fell in love with America and Harley Davidson and I had two 883 in New York that I fully customized. I remember crossing the bridges in New York, the Brooklyn Bridge and the Verrazano Bridge, the New York skyline as landscape, a great great experience and the best way to feel free. Another great bike moment has been riding from Miami to Key West on a Fat Boy… Pure Joy.
